ענר, חייל קרבי ביחידה המובחרת של חטיבת הנח"ל, נרצח מחוץ לתפקידו בזמן שהגן על אחרים בפסטיבל נובה. לא חמוש, הוא הגן על מקלט צפוף. זרק באומץ שבעה רימונים שהשליכו מחבלים לתוך המקלט, הוא הציל שבעה חיים לפני שהרימון השמיני לקח את חייו. "ענר שפירו... הציל את חיינו ומגיע לו אות כבוד על היותו מלאך ששמר עלינו", כתבה ניצולת הפיגוע אגם.

Aner, a Combat Soldier in the Nahal Brigade's elite unit, was murdered off-duty while defending others at the Nova music festival. Unarmed, he shielded a crowded bomb shelter. Bravely intercepting seven grenades thrown by terrorists, he saved seven lives before the eighth grenade claimed his life. "Aner Shapiro… saved our lives and he deserves a a medal of honor for being an angel who guarded us,” wrote attack survivor Agam.
